Record-breaking 1822 Half Eagle Sold for $8.2 Million

The only 1822 Half Eagle available to collectors has sold in a record-breaking auction yesterday. While 17,796 examples of the Capped Bust Half Eagle were struck in 1822, only 3 have been known to survive to this day. Two of those are secure in the Smithsonian Institute, while this third has only been in three private collections in the last 115 years. Graded in About Uncirculated 50 condition by PCGS, the legendary 1822 Half Eagle sold for $8.4 million at auction, setting the record for most paid at auction for a gold coin struck by the U.S. Mint. This specimen was previously sold at auction from the Eliasberg collection in 1982 for $687,500.
