Set of 8: Conclave various Ancient and World Coins of the Popes w/ Wood Box V2

Description
  • Each of these 8 coins were struck during the reign of the most famous Popes
  • Beginning with the first Pope, St. Peter all the way through the most influential Pope of the modern era, St. John Paul II
  • St. Peter (A.D. 32-67): St. Peter was not only the first Pope, but he was also one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, known then as Simon. This bronze prutah was issued in Judaea by Roman prefect Porcius Festus, a personal friend of St. Peter.
  • St. Sylvester (A.D. 314-335): Under the direction of St. Sylvester, the Council of Nicaea was held, which created the Nicene Creed recited by Catholics to this day. St. Sylvester’s papacy aligns almost exactly with the reign of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor of Rome. This bronze coin was issued in that monumental era.
  • St. Gregory the Great (A.D. 590-604): Known for his charity, St. Gregory the Great was known for selling off land owned by the Church to feed the poor during a famine. He was canonized into sainthood immediately upon death. This bronze coin was struck under Emperor Maurice Tiberius, whose time in power coincided with St. Gregory’s papal reign.
  • Innocent III (A.D. 1198-1216): Considered the most powerful pope, Innocent III influenced the rule of many kings and presided over the Fourth Crusade, which captured Constantinople. This aspron trachy, also known as a cup coin, features an image of Jesus, and circulated in the Byzantine Empire during the papacy of Innocent III.
  • St. Pius V (1566-72): St. Pius V standardized the Roman Rite within the Latin Church, which dictates how Mass and Liturgy are performed. He also excommunicated Elizabeth I of England for heresy. This bronze coin features a symbol of Philip II, King of Spain, who supported St. Pius V during his conclave.
  • Blessed Pius IX (1846-78): After St. Peter, Blessed Pius IX is the longest-reigning pope. During his nearly 32-year rule, he presided over the First Vatican Council and saw the Papal States unify into Italy in 1860. This 5 Centesimi was struck in the new nation of Italy, at the end of Pius IX era as Pope.
  • Venerable Pius XII (1939-58): Pope Pius XII reigned during two of the most tumultuous decades in world history, during the second World War and its aftermath. Just as World War II forced the US Mint to replace copper cents with steel cents, so too did the Vatican with their 1 Lira coins, creating the aluminum Lira in this set.
  • St. John Paul II (1978-2005): St. John Paul II has the third-longest reign, redefining how the world viewed the Pope. He was the first Pope to visit the White House, meeting with President Jimmy Carter in 1979. This 2003 Polish 2 Zloty coin was issued to mark the 25th anniversary of his Pontificate.
