Explore the History and Beauty of the Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic silver coins in American history, admired by collectors for its iconic design, deep historical significance, and extensive mintage span. First struck in 1878, the series was born from the rich supply of silver from the Comstock Lode in Nevada and was authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, reversing the earlier demonetization of silver coinage caused by the Coinage Act of 1873. This classic Dollar became a defining symbol of the United States during a transformative period in American expansion. These coins were minted at several U.S. branch mints, including the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, San Francisco, and Denver Mints, showcasing the rich history of the United States Mint. A variety of factors goes into determining the rarity and desirability of a Morgan Silver Dollar today, including mintage figures, surviving populations, and historical significance.

The coin was designed by George T. Morgan, the 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, who famously modeled Lady Liberty after a Philadelphia schoolteacher, Anna Willess Williams. On the obverse, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, symbolic of American freedom. Around the cap are stocks of cotton and wheat, representing the United States’ most crucial crops. The reverse design depicts an eagle clutching both an olive branch of peace and three arrows, symbolizing a readiness for war. Above the eagle is the motto “In God We Trust.” Vintage Morgan Dollars contain 90% silver and 10% copper, with a total weight of 26.73 grams and a diameter of 38.1 mm.

The Evolution of the Morgan Dollar

Over time, many Morgan Dollars were melted down for their silver content, increasing the rarity of examples in any grade, especially those from 1878-1904. Some Morgan Silver Dollars were stored in Treasury vaults and later released as part of the GSA (General Services Administration) Hoard, which are especially sought after today. These releases included Carson City Morgan Dollars that became essential additions for dedicated collectors building a high-quality set of Dollar coins. The rarest and most sought-after Morgan Dollar issues often combine low mintage figures with limited surviving populations.

The Morgan Dollar legacy continues today with the modern U.S. Mint issues (2021, 2023-Date) struck in .999 fine silver, in contrast to the original 90% silver classic issues. These highly popular modern issues are produced with a variety of different strikes and finishes, including Mint State, Proof, and Reverse Proof.
