Set of 6: 1856-S & 1857-S SS Central America Finest Known Set
In 1857, the S.S. Central America set sail from Havana to New York with 30,000 pounds of gold that came directly from the epicenter of the California Gold Rush in northern California. By September 9, 1857 this ship was met by a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. Bombarded by winds of up to 105 MPH, the S.S. Central America succumbed to the hurricane on September 12. Over a century later, in 1988, a sizeable sum of gold that was lost aboard the S.S. Central America was discovered at the bottom of the ocean.
On board the SS Central America were six types of gold coins: Gold Dollars, Gold Quarter Eagles, Three Dollar Gold Pieces, Gold Half Eagles, Gold Eagles, and Gold Double Eagles. In order to preserve the memory of the SSCA, the renowned numismatist, Dwight Manley has put together a finest known type set of the gold coins found among its wreckage.
This finest known SS Central America gold type set includes an 1856-S Gold Dollar graded MS65+, which is the single finest known example of its issue; an 1857-S Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle graded MS64+, which is one of the two finest known examples of its issue; an 1857-S Three Dollar Gold Piece graded MS67, which is the single finest known example of its issue; an 1857-S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle graded MS66, which is the single finest known example of its issue; an 1857-S Liberty Head Gold Eagle graded MS64+,
which is the single finest known example of its issue; and an 1857-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle graded MS67+, which is the single finest known Type 1 Double Eagle of any date and mintmark. As a testament to the beauty of these stunning coins, each of them has been certified by CAC.
With five of these six stunning shipwreck gold coins being the single finest known examples from the San Francisco Mint for their type, it is impossible to establish a set of this magnitude ever again.
