$4 1879 Flowing Hair Stella NGC PF65 Cameo
The Flowing Hair Stella, designed by Charles Barber, was minted in 1879 and 1880. Although a limited amount of these coins were distributed to politicians, the Stella never officially went into production. Some numismatists even consider the Stella a pattern coin since so few examples were struck and it never went into circulation. This example was struck in 1879 at the Philadelphia Mint and has been graded in Proof 65 Cameo condition. Out of every 1879-P Flowing Hair Stella struck, only 26 have been graded in PF65CAM condition with just 56 graded higher. With a miniscule mintage of only about 425 examples and an even lower PF65CAM population, this coin is an Absolute and Condition Rarity.
