$2.5 (1831-1834) K-6 C. Bechtler No 75G Coarse Beads PCGS AU58 CAC
When only the Philadelphia Mint was striking American coins, many territorial mints received local gold and produced coins for the area. One such mint was started by Christopher Bechtler during 1831 in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Much needed after the North Carolina Gold Rush in the 1820s, the Bechtler Mint struck over $2 million worth of gold into $1, $2.50, and $5 denomination coins. This example is of the variety with “20C” and no “75” on the obverse with coarse beads. With only 106 known examples from this variety, this is a true piece of numismatic history! As one of only 4 examples of this variety graded in About Uncirculated 58 condition with just 28 examples of any variety in Mint State condition, this is not only an Absolute and Condition Rarity, but it is also one of the finest known.
