1866-S NM Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle NGC MS61

Only 8 examples graded in Mint State 61 condition

The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1866 and is graded in About Uncirculated 50 condition. Struck from 90% gold, the Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle denomination was created as a result of the massive amounts of gold introduced into the economy at the time by the California Gold Rush. Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles of this year and mintmark were struck both with and without the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the eagle on the reverse. No Motto 1866-S Liberty Head Double Eagles, such as this one, have a much smaller mintage with only as estimated 120,000 coins struck. Out of all 1866-S No Motto Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, only 8 examples have been graded in Mint State 61 condition with just 2 graded higher. Not only is this Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle both an Absolute and Condition Rarity, but it is undoubtedly among the finest known of the issue.
