1864-S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle NGC AU53
This is one of about 30 surviving examples of the 1864-S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle. In 1865, the US Mint added the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the reverse of the Liberty Head Half Eagle. Issues in the final years of the No Motto era were struck in incredibly low numbers. Only 3,888 examples of the San Francisco struck 1864 issue were produced, which is an incredibly low mintage! Of those, only 3 have been graded in About Uncirculated 53 condition. With just 5 graded higher, and only 2 of those in Mint State condition, this 1864-S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle is not only an Absolute and Condition Rarity, but also one of the finest known.
