This 1803 Small Stars Reverse Capped Bust Gold Eagle is among the finest known of the issue. Early Gold Eagles underwent many design changes. Among those is that the 1803 and 1799 issues were struck with Small Stars and Large Stars. As the series ending in 1804, this is the final year with the Small Stars variety. Only 15,017 examples were struck, making up an incredibly small mintage. After the Capped Bust series ended in 1804, a Gold Eagle was not struck again for 34 years. With only 3 examples of the 1803 Small Stars Reverse Capped Bust Gold Eagle grading higher in MS65 condition, this coin is among the finest known.
