Coming from the first year of issue, this 1850-O Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is the finest known example to come from the shipwreck of the SS Republic. In 1865, on a journey from New York to New Orleans, the SS Republic sank while transporting silver half dollars, gold eagles, and gold double eagles. Only 141,000 Gold Double Eagles were struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1850. Between NGC and PCGS, just 710 have been graded in any condition at all with only 11 in Mint State condition. This is the only 1851-O Double Eagle from the SS Republic graded in Mint State at all. Not only is this MS60 example an Absolute and Condition Rarity, but it is among the finest known of the issue and the finest known from the SS Republic.
