The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This set includes two 1897 examples, one struck at the San Francisco Mint and one struck at the Philadelphia Mint, both graded in Mint State 62 condition. These 1897 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles are of the Type 3 variety which has the denomination ''TWENTY DOLLARS'' written out at the bottom of the reverse. Significantly less than 1% of the total mintages of both the 1897-P and 1897-S have been graded in MS62 condition. With such low Mint State 62 populations, these examples are both Condition Rarities. Coins like these Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
