Description
The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This turn-of-the-century example was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1899 and is graded Mint State 62. This 1899-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 3 variety. Out of all 1899-S Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, significantly less than 1% have been graded in MS62 condition, making this example a Condition Rarity. Coins like this 1899-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
