Beginning in 2001, the West Point Mint took complete responsibility for the production of the American Silver Eagle coin. However, due to an emergency closure of the West Point Mint in April 2020, production of the coins was split between the San Francisco and Philadelphia Mints. These limited production ASE’s do not depict a mintmark on the coin and will be labelled as “Emergency Production” by NGC. This specific example was struck at the San Francisco Mint and has been graded in perfect Mint State 70 condition. In addition, this coin has been certified as First Day of Issue meaning it was purchased on the coin’s first day of issuance and sent to the grading service within 24 hours. Only a fraction of American Silver Eagles released in 2020 are even pedigreed to the emergency production at the San Francisco Mint, and far fewer carry the First Day of Issue designation making this coin a must for every collector.
