The American Women Quarters series will highlight five noteworthy women with new designs each year from 2022 to 2025.  The first reverse design of this new series features Maya Angelou, shown with her arms upraised while a bird flies in silhouette behind her, evoking the imagery of her autobiography ''I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.''  Further honoring women, the Washington obverse comes from Laura Gardin Fraser's original 1932 design.
