The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck in 1869, at the San Francisco Mint and is graded in Extremely Fine 45 condition. Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint are especially sought-after because the denomination is so closely tied to the California Gold Rush. This 1869-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 2 variety, which was only minted for 10 years and is notorious for being difficult to find in any grades. Out of all 1869-S Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, only 519 examples have been graded in XF45 condition. This XF45 example is even graded higher than the 1869-S found at the Smithsonian Institution.
