1855-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle AU50

Description

The Twenty Dollar Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1850 to 1907. This example was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1855 and is graded About Uncirculated 50. This 1855-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is of the Type 1 variety, which was only minted for 16 years and is notorious for being extremely difficult to find in high grades. Out of all 1855-S Liberty Head Double Eagles struck, only 277 have been graded in AU50 condition.  With a low mintage of 879,675 and an even lower AU50  population,  this  1855-S Liberty Head Double Eagle is  a tremendous Absolute and Condition Rarity. Coins like this 1855-S Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became increasingly rarer as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
