The Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle, designed by Christian Gobrecht, was minted from 1839 to 1908. One of the longest lasting denominations in United States history, the Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle is the only coin struck at all seven Mints. This set includes one example each of the 1886-S, 1892-P, and 1906-D issues, all in Mint State 63 condition. As it is the first of only two issues of the Liberty Head Half Eagle series struck at the Denver Mint, the 1906-D is immensely popular with collectors. With mintages of 753,480 and 320,000 examples respectively, the 1892-P and 1906-D examples are each an Absolute Rarity. All three Liberty Head Gold Half Eagles in this set have MS63 populations of less than 1% of their mintages, making them each a Condition Rarity.
Coins like these Liberty Head Gold Half Eagles became increasingly rare as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This order sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down.
