This series began in 1985 when President Reagan signed into law the Liberty Coin Act, which began the American Silver Eagles series. The intention for this series was to reduce the Treasury`s stock piles of silver and to help people invest in silver and purchase silver coins regulated by the U.S. government. As a result, the series has been a popular collector`s coin since 1986.
For the first seven years of the series, Proof American Silver Eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint. Then from 1993 to 2000, the Mint struck the Proof coins at the Philadelphia Mint, beginning in 2001 all Proof ASE`s came from the West Point Mint displaying a W mintmark. In 2009, the demand for bullion was so high Mint Director at the time, Edmund C. Moy, decided to with-hold the production of the optional Proof American Silver Eagle. Therefore, the 2009 ASE is not included in this set since there were no 2009 Proof American Silver Eagles produced in this year. The 2016 American Silver Eagle included in this set contained a one year only special lettered edge to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the series. This special one-year type design features the words "30th Anniversary" incused on the edge.
