1864 Indian Head Cent PCGS MS64RB

The Indian Head Cent, designed by James Barton Longacre, was minted from 1859 to 1909. This specific example was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1864 and has been graded in Proof 64 Red Brown condition. A beautiful lavender and midnight purple patina colors the obverse of the coin. The “L on Ribbon” variety is the greatest rarity of the Indian Head cent series. It can be distinguished by the stray “L” on the secondary ribbon on the reverse. An extremely miniscule mintage of about 20 examples were struck, making any example simply difficult to find. Only 2 examples have been graded in Proof 64 condition with just 5 graded finer. With so few “L on Ribbon” 1864 Indian Head Cents even minted, this stunning coin is not only a Condition Rarity but is also an Absolute Rarity.
