Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in the city of Subotica, which is located on the Yugoslav-Hungary border. Due to World War II, Itzchak and his family were tragically sent to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp in 1944 when he was just 9 years of age. Mauthausen was liberated the following year and the Tarkay family eventually found themselves joining the pilgrimage to Israel in 1949. Soon, Tarkay studied art at Bezalel Academy or Art & Design before eventually graduating from Avni Institute of Art & Design in 1956. Tarkay was heavily inspired by the French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements, particularly by Matisse and Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1986 and 1987 he was featured in the International Art Expo in New York City. Over his career, Tarkay has been a part of over 50 exhibitions. Tarkay`s visceral style is characterized by vibrant color schemes, which are determined by spontaneous feelings that occurred while observing the living world around him. Due to his unique take on art, Tarkay was widely known as a leading authority in a new movement of figurative artists.
