$50 1855 Gold Liberty Kellogg Restrike SS Central America PCGS Gem Proof

Description

When the Gold Rush began in California, the US Mint was not able to produce enough coinage to meet demand leading to various private mints to open. The biggest of these operations were known as Kellogg & Company, which struck an estimated 50% of Gold Double Eagles used in the area. This .887 fine gold coin is a restrike of the rarely seen $50 Kellogg Gold Coin achieved through the use of a modern replica based on the original Kellogg die and composed of gold found in the SS Central America shipwreck. The reverse has added text saying, ''STRUCK SEPTEMBER 2, 2001 C.H.S.'' indicating when this coin was struck. Only 5,000 of these once-in-a-lifetime gold coins were struck by the California Historical Society in San Francisco. With such a low mintage and coming from SS Central America shipwreck gold, this coin is an Absolute Rarity.
