The American Silver Eagle was first released in 1986 as part of the American Eagle Bullion Program. The design features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, originally used on the half dollar from 1916 to 1947. Lady Liberty strides toward a rising sun wrapped in the stars and stripes of the American flag. The reverse designed by US Chief Coin Designer and Engraver, John M. Mercanti, depicts a beautiful heraldic eagle holding arrows and olive branch in each claw, with 13 stars above the eagle. The eagle looks towards the olive branch signifying the U.S.’s desire for peace but, with the arrows held in its other talon, a readiness for war if necessary.
