Description
- The Double Eagle was first authorized in 1849, as a means to convert the massive quantities of gold pouring out of California into usable coinage
- This same law simultaneously established the nation’s smallest and largest gold coin, immediately cementing the Double Eagle as the new flagship gold coin of the United States.
- James B. Longacre's Liberty Head or "Coronet Head" design was used from 1850 until partway through 1907. Three major Types were struck during its tenure:
- - Type 1 (1850-1866): No Motto, TWENTY D.
- - Type 2 (1866-1876): W/ Motto, TWENTY D.
- - Type 3 (1877-1907): W/ Motto, TWENTY DOLLARS
- Between Type 1 (1850-1866), Type 2 (1866-1876) & Type 3 (1877-1907) Liberty Head Doubles Eagles, its no contest as far as which Type is the scarcest. Even taking shipwreck coins into consideration Type 1 Double Eagles are indisputably the scarcest.
- Had recent shipwreck discoveries not taking place resulting in thousands of Type 1 Double Eagles preserved on the ocean floor untouched, such as the SS Central America (1857); SS Republic (1865); & SS Brother Jonathan (1865), the number of total and uncirculated surviving examples would be significantly lower.
- By removing just the 1856-S & 1857-S SS Central America examples from the population records the total number of Type 1 Double Eagles drops to 25,451 with less than 12% in MS condition!
