The Kennedy Half Dollar was created in order to commemorate President John F. Kennedy after his tragic assassination. In 1964, the first year that the Kennedy Half Dollar series was issued, there were two varieties that were minted. This set of Kennedys contains both varieties: a 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar in Proof 66 and a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar in Proof 68. The reason that two varieties were created was due to Jacqueline Kennedy`s disapproval of Kennedy`s hair on the original design. After about 100,000 Kennedy Half Dollars were struck, the presses were stopped and the design was changed. These 100,000 or so original Kennedy Half Dollars are what have come to be known as the Accented Hair variety of the coin.
