Description
- Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles were minted from 1850 to 1907
- Struck in the first year of issue, 1850, at the Mother Mint in Philadelphia
- From the Type 1 variety, which features no motto on the reverse, and was only struck for the first 16 years of the series, making it notoriously difficult to find in high grades
- Contains nearly one ounce of gold
- Only 1,754 examples known in any grade from NGC
- Graded in Extremely Fine 45 condition
- Gold coins became increasingly rarer after 1933 due to Executive Order 6102, which sought to revive the American economy by recalling circulating American gold coins to be melted down
