The 1932 design for the Washington Quarter was originally intended to observe the 200th anniversary of George Washington`s birth however, due to its popularity the quarter design has been minted continuously with only slight changes to this day. Quarters produced before 1964 were made of 90% silver such as this 1940 Washington Quarter. John Flanagan designed the obverse with a profile of Washington inspired by Jean Antoine Houdon`s 1785 famous bust. The designer`s initials can be found at the base of Washington`s neck. On the reverse, the modernistic eagle displays its wings while perched on a quiver of arrows. The mintmark lies below the wreath for coins produced from 1932 to 1964. This 1940 example has been graded MS66.
