Nickels

After the conclusion of the Civil War, the United States did not have enough silver to continue producing half dimes, so they turned to a different material: nickel. The half dime, the preceding five cent piece of the United States, was soon replaced by the nickel, which was first minted in 1866. Although the nickel has cycled through a handful of designs, it still continues to be produced today.
