Out of all examples, there are only 22 examples graded higher than this one, most of which are just one grade higher at Mint State 66! Due to President Theodore Roosevelt`s dislike of U.S. coinage at the time, he employed the famed sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the Double Eagle. This second year of issue 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles contains the motto "In God We Trust." The original 1907 design of this coin did not contain the motto, but due to public disapproval, the motto was added to the coins in 1908. Years later, in 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt initiated Executive Order 6102, which recalled gold from the American public in order to be melted down. As a result of this executive order, rare gold coins like the 1908 Saint-Gaudens became drastically more difficult to find.
