The 1911-D Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle came in two varieties, these varieties have to do with the striking strength of the D mintmark. There is the lackluster "Weak D" variety and the highly desirable "Strong D" variety. This 1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle is of the "Strong D" variety. With only 55,600 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagles struck in 1911 at the Denver Mint, this issue has firmly established itself as the key date of the entire series. Out of the entire mintage of the 1911-D, only 1,083 coins have graded in Mint State 61 between both PCGS and NGC.
