The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag, began its mintage in 1938 and continues to be produced to this day. This specific 1959 Jefferson Nickel example has been graded Proof 69 Star by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Out of every Proof Jefferson Nickel struck, only 580 have been graded Proof 69, with none graded higher. This specific example, however, is one of only 13 Proof 69 examples that have been given a Star designation by NGC. The illustrious Star designation is rarely given out by NGC and is only awarded to coins that exhibit the highest quality eye appeal for their grade and year.
