Gold

Using gold as a base for coinage can be traced back thousands of years throughout the course of civilization. In fact, some of the first coins from about 600BC were made from electrum, a naturally occurring alloy that contains both gold and silver. The United State has used gold in the Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, Eagle and Double Eagle series, which include the illustrious Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens coins.
