Although coins are generally thought of as having bronze, silver and golden hues, there are a variety of vibrant rainbow hues that can show up on coins as well. These specific examples are called toned coins. Toning is a naturally occurring process that takes place when elements such as sulfur trigger chemical reactions on the surface metal of a coin. Slowly over many years these reactions develop into patinas of beautiful rainbow toning.
