Since the year 1789, we as Americans have looked to our Commander in Chief, our democratically elected United States President, for guidance and leadership in times of dire need. As a means of celebrating the establishment of the Presidential Office, which began on April 30, 1789 with the unanimous election of George Washington, Senate passed legislation to enact the Presidential Dollar Coin Program.
Beginning on January 1, 2007, this program honored each of the first 39 presidents of our glorious country in the order that they served. This was done by depicting their portraits on a newly designed dollar coin. For the next nine years, until 2016, the U.S Mint issued a new Presidential Dollar every three months. On the obverse of each of these 39 coins is depicted a unique portrait of a president, the date of their respective presidency, as well as their term in office. The reverse of the Presidential Dollar, designed by Don Everhart, appears on each of the 39 coins and depicts a beautiful rendition of the Statue of Liberty as well as the inscription of “United States of America” and the denomination.
Out of every Presidential Dollar struck, less than 1% of the coins were struck in Proof.
