“They didn’t receive the attention that modern coins of today received,” Mike Garofalo said of the gold commemoratives struck over 100 years ago. “These are soft metals, and it’s amazing when they haven’t been nicked or polished over the years. It's amazing how they survived.” Also prized among numismatists is the packaging meant to hold the commemoratives. When certain coins exhibit what is known as tab toning, collectors know that they have been kept in better condition. Tab toning occurs in coins that have been kept in their original display packaging.
