American Swords 101

Before modern guns were efficient to use and easily manufactured, the most prevalent weapons used on the battlefield were swords. Throughout American history, these weapons have been used to uphold and protect our inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. From officers to medical staff to cavalry to artillerymen, all ranks of the army used to hold swords. Without these weapons, monumental wars such as the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War could never have been won and American freedom could not have been preserved. Swords that have seen battle will often exhibit wear in the form of chipped blades and torn grips, but these imperfections are exactly the reason why these swords tell such compelling stories. Due to their integral role in American history, swords that have been used in battles during these crucial turning points are among the most treasured of American collectibles.

These weapons, however, were not solely created with utilitarian purposes. Many swords were intricately crafted as ornate pieces of fine art. These particular swords are known as presentation swords and were awarded to officers out of respect for their services and deeds during major military conflicts. Presentation swords are often crafted from high grade materials and their blades showcase highly detailed engravings of military motifs such as American eagles, shields, as well as scroll and leaf patterns. The pommels of these swords are often gilded and depict complex designs such as eagle and lion heads. Presentation swords that bear inscriptions of the awardee, the battle that they fought in, and their services are among the most valuable and highly sought-after examples.
