$50 1851 LE Humbert 880 PCGS MS61
This example is one of the few surviving $50 1851 Humbert “880” Gold Coins, struck the first year that the U.S. Assay Office was established in San Francisco. With an overwhelming demand for gold coins following the California Gold Rush, various companies took on the task of producing coinage. This large, octagonal coin is a unique piece of American history with more than twice the amount of gold as a Double Eagle. Most examples were melted down for their gold content to be struck into official U.S. coinage when the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854. With only 10 examples graded in Mint State 61 condition and a surviving population of 120 examples, this 1851 Humbert “880” coin is not only an Absolute and Condition Rarity, but also one of the finest known.
