One of the many ambitious goals of President John F. Kennedy was to safely land a man on the moon and bring him back to earth. Although this was not done during JFK’s life, it was his initiative and his support of the American space program that allowed this monumental event to occur in 1969. In order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a limited 68,000 2019-P Apollo 11 5 ounce Commemorative Silver Dollars were struck. With such a low mintage, this coin is considered a true absolute rarity. In addition, this stunning 2019-P Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar that we have is graded a perfect Proof 70 by NGC and comes housed in a limited-edition black core holder!

On May 25th, 1961, before a joint session of Congress, President John F. Kennedy declared his goal of sending a man to the moon and returning him safely to earth before the decade was over. Unfortunately, Kennedy’s tragic assassination on November 22, 1963, would stop him from witnessing the realization of his dream. On July 16, 1969, Kennedy’s vision was one step closer to being accomplished as Apollo 11 took off from earth with its aims set on the moon. Four days later, on July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon, allowing American astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, to be the first humans to set foot on the moon. It was only 4 days after that, on July 24, 1969, when splash down occurred and the crew of the Apollo 11 landed safely back onto earth and into the Pacific Ocean. President Kennedy’s once outlandish dream had finally become an undeniable reality.

In 1969, America finally won the Space Race when the Apollo 11 lunar landing occurred. As a means of celebrating the 50th anniversary of this monumental feat, the U.S. Mint has struck a coin with convex and concave surfaces for only the second time in history. The obverse of this coin has a concave surface which depicts the first foot print that was imprinted onto the moon by American astronaut Neil Armstrong. The reverse has convex surfaces and showcases a closeup of the iconic photograph titled Buzz Aldrin on the Moon. In this rendition of the photo, Neil Armstrong, the American Flag, and the Apollo 11 lunar module are seen reflected in the helmet of American astronaut Buzz Aldrin. With only a limited 68,000 Commemorative 5 oz Silver Dollars struck, these stunning coins are a great way to add your numismatic collection.
