1911-D Strong D Indian Head Quarter Eagle MS63

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, is one of the most innovative coin designs created during the American Coin Renaissance. What makes this coin so unique is the special way it was struck. The design of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is impressed beneath the coin’s surface. As a result, the fields of the coin are the highest point of relief on the coin. This type of design is known as an incuse design. This stunning American coin design truly stands out among all others because it is the only incuse design ever struck in U.S. history.

The obverse of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle was a departure from all previous Indian Head coinage as it was designed based on a Native American. Previously, all Indian Head coinage designs were depictions of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress.

Out of all Indian Head Quarter Eagles struck, the 1911-D is by far the rarest key date of the entire series. With a mintage of only 55,680 coins, it is by far the lowest minted Quarter Eagle that was struck. Even the 1914, which is the second lowest minted Quarter Eagle, has a mintage over four times as large as the 1911-D. In general, the mintages of the Quarter Eagle fall into the 400,000 to 700,000 range. The low mintage of the 1911-D is due to a lack of demand for the Quarter Eagle. As a result, the Denver Mint focused most of its resources on striking more commonly used coins such as Lincoln Cents and Mercury Dimes in 1911.

This stunning 1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle is graded Mint State 63 by PCGS. In total, PCGS and NGC have only graded 883 examples of the 1911-D Quarter Eagle in Mint State 63 condition with just 903 examples graded higher, making this coin a true Condition Rarity.
