1907 High Relief Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle NGC/PCGS MS65+
The High Relief Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles are legendary among American coinage. This Mint State 65+ example is one of only 31 of these 1907 High Relief Wire Edge Saint-Gaudens. When Augustus Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt teamed up to change the face of United States coins, the design initially featured an Ultra High Relief design. To accommodate striking, this was lowered to the High Relief that you see here. The Wire Edge designation refers to a thin raised line around the circumference of the coin, most likely caused by the gold planchet being squeezed through the collar. As only 12,367 examples of this High Relief design were struck before it was lowered once again, this coin is considered an Absolute Rarity. With just 31 examples graded in MS65+ condition and just 100 graded higher, this coin is not only a Condition Rarity, but also one of the finest known.
