- In the first year of the Morgan Dollar in 1878, the first 749,500 coins were struck with 8 Tail Feathers. However, this is ornithologically incorrect since bald eagles have 7 Tail Feathers.
- Later in the year another 9,759,300 Morgan Dollars were struck with 7 Tail Feathers. A couple major varieties exist; 1878 7/8TF, 1878 7TF Reverse of 1878, & 1878 7TF Reverse of 1879.
- The 1878 7TF Reverse of 1878, & 1878 7TF Reverse of 1879 varieties are distinguished by the breast type of the eagle and top arrow in the bundle.
- On the 1878 7TF Reverse of 1878 the breast of the eagle is flat/concave and the topmost arrow is parallel. Often called the “Second Reverse.”
- On the 1878 7TF Reverse of 1879 the breast of the eagle is round/convex and the topmost arrow is slanted. Often called the “Third Reverse.”

- As seen by the table it is quite clear between all Philadelphia struck Morgan Dollars during the first year of production, the 1878 7TF Reverse of 1879 variety is the scarcest.
- Between MS, MSPL & MSDMPL examples, just under 10,000 coins exist in all grades, this is lowest among the 1878 Philadelphia Morgan Dollars.
- The finest known regular issue MS examples are in MS67 condition with 3 pieces certified. A MS67 is expected to bring approximately $50,000+ in the current market.
