Pop quiz: What is the 2nd rarest proof Morgan dollar struck at the Philadelphia mint from 1878 through 1904?
Well, I made it kind of obvious with my opening statement.
The 1878 7TF, estimated mintage 250 coins.
The rarest, lowest mintage proof Morgan struck in Philly would be the 1878 Rev of 79. That coin borders on the impossible. Most estimates suggest only 6 to 10 have survived. I handled the finest known Cameo example at one time, a PF 64 CAMEO, which eventually upgraded to a PF 64+ CAMEO. I placed that coin with a client over 10 years ago for around 300k.
In my opinion, when the day comes when a proof Morgan dollar sells for over $1,000,000…..that 1878 Reverse of 79 will be the most likely candidate to be the first proof Morgan to break the million dollar barrier.
This 1878 7TF in the extraordinary grade of PF 65 ULTRA CAMEO might be second in line!
I loved that 1878 Rev of 79, it was stunning. But…..it didn’t have the flash and mind-blowing cameo contrast and eye-appeal of this 1878 7TF !!!
The 1878 7TF is not only second rarest Philadelphia issue proof Morgan, most surviving examples are very darkly, heavily toned. Attractive examples border on the impossible.
Well, I have been most fortunate to be able to offer the most beautiful 1878 proof Morgan I have ever handled!
I know my proof Morgans. For many years my clients owned the #1 ranked finest proof Morgan collection on the NGC Registry.
Never have I seen an 1878, whether the more common 8TF (estimated mintage 500), Reverse of 79, or a 7TF, as beautiful and magnificently cameo’d as the example on this page.
Dwell on the next sentence for a minute:
Of the 750+ proof Morgan dollars struck at the Philadelphia mint in that first year of issue, 1878, there is only 1 specimen that has ever been certified in ULTRA CAMEO by NGC – the stunning specimen RCTV will be offering!!!
AND…..it is a GEM PROOF 65 ULTRA CAMEO!!!
The devices are a glorious pure snowy-white obverse and reverse, contrasted against the deepest mirrors I have seen on an 1878 proof Morgan.
There is some lovely, original plum toning about the perimeter on both obverse and reverse, perfectly framing and highlighting the magnificent cameo effect.
In my opinion, an 1878 7TF of this caliber and eye-appeal should be selling for 500k+ today.
And there will come a day when it will have a value far beyond 500k!
The fact that I am able to price it at about 1/5th that level TODAY just points to how undervalued some proof Morgan dollars are, at the current time.
Each year there are proof Morgan dollars that appear in major auctions. They are nice coins, but not the finest known.
The fact is, virtually all the finest known proof Morgan dollars are now safely tucked away in collections, where they might not see the light of day for a generation or more.
The fact that I am able to offer the finest known 1878-7TF ULTRA CAMEO proof Morgan dollar, an incredibly low mintage issue, that is typically among the lowest quality proof Morgan dollars in the series – but for this amazing wonder coin, is miraculous!!!
It is an absolute thrill to be able to offer this irreplaceable specimen at this point in time, at this price.
This is a true classic, a coin you want to put away for the long term, and definitely keep in the family as long as possible. The coin is a Crown Jewel among proof Morgan dollars, and the most beautiful first year of issue 1878 I have ever seen or handled.
