1876 Three Dollar Indian Princess Head Proof 67 UCAM

The Three Dollar Indian Princess Head, designed by James Barton Longacre, was minted from 1854 to 1889. Proof examples of this coin, however, did not commence until 5 years later in 1859. It is theorized that these gold coins were produced expressly to purchase sheets of stamps, which contained 100 stamps per sheet. As the cost of a stamp was 3 cents, one Three- Dollar Gold Piece would equate out to the exact cost of one sheet.

The obverse of this coin showcases an Indian princess wearing a feathered headdress that is inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” Circumscribed around the Indian princess is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn and cotton, which encircles the denomination and the date.

1876 Proof Indian Princess Head Three Dollar pieces have an incredibly low mintage of just 45 coins, making them elusive in all grades. Interestingly, these 45 coins were not all produced in one day. The first 20 coins of this issue were produced on February 19th while the remaining 25 coins were struck nearly four months later on June 14th.

This specific Three Dollar Indian Princess Head was struck in Proof in 1876 and has been graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo. As the only year in which no circulation Three-Dollar Gold Pieces were struck, the 1876 Indian Princess Head is a highly sought-after numismatic treasure. In total, only 2 of these coins have been graded in PF67 UCAM condition with none higher, making this stunning example one of the finest known.
