Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles were minted from 1850 to 1907, designed by James B. Longacre, and contain .9675 of an ounce of pure gold. Out of all Liberty Head Double Eagles struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1873, there is no telling how many coins of the issue still exist to this day. This is due to a gold recall initiated by Executive Order 6102 in 1933. Today, we have a limited amount of these rare 1873-P “Open 3” Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle examples available in Mint State 62 condition. Out of the total mintage of 1873-P Liberty Heads, significantly less than 1% of the coins have been graded in MS62 condition between both NGC and PCGS.

With the discovery of vast quantities of gold in California during 1849, Americans from all over the country packed up their belongings and began the over 2,000 mile journey westward in hopes of supporting their families. As a result of the large amounts of gold brought into the American economy by the California Gold Rush of 1849, the first coin of the Double Eagle twenty dollar series was struck.

These rare gold coins became even rarer when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 in 1933. This executive order was meant to help boost the declining American economy by recalling public gold and melting it back down. Due to the large amount of gold that was seized from the public at this time, coins like the 1873-P “Open3” Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle became even more limited than they already were. Today, you can acquire your very own 1873-P “Open 3” Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle in Mint State 62 condition for the low price of only $3,795.
