The Liberty Head Gold Eagle, designed by Christian Gobrecht, was minted from 1838 to 1907. In 1866, the San Francisco Mint struck 8,500 examples of the Liberty Head Gold Eagle. This example has been graded in About Uncirculated 53 condition. Out of all 1866-S Liberty Head Gold Eagles, only 7 have been graded in AU53 condition with just 16 finer known examples. With so few examples graded higher than this one, this stunning coin is not only a Condition Rarity, but is also among the finest known examples of the issue.
