1861-C Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle NGC/PCGS AU55
1861-C Liberty Head Half Eagle is a truly remarkable coin and one of the most popular issues of its entire series. Its mintage of only 6,879 coins is the lowest of any $5 gold piece struck by the Charlotte Mint. Also adding to its popularity is its production during the first year of the Civil War. In fact, it is rumored that some coins from this issue were struck by Southern forces. This belief stems from examples that have been found with “America” being fractured on the coins’ reverses.
An extremely low quantity of these coins have survived to date in any condition at all. In total, only 204 coins have been certified by NGC or PCGS. This example is one of just 36 graded AU55, and only 37 finer known examples exist.
