1857-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle MS64

In the past century or so, the “D” mintmark has become synonymous with the Denver Mint. However, there was a lesser-known previous branch mint that had originally claimed the “D” mintmark. This branch was called the Dahlonega Mint. Built in Dahlonega, Georgia, this branch was signed into law on March 3, 1835 and was a result of our nation’s second gold rush in the Southern Appalachian region. With vast quantities of gold coming from Georgia, it was clear that building a new mint branch would be more convenient and safer than shipping gold to the Philadelphia Mint to be coined.

Struck at the Dahlonega Mint in 1857, this Liberty Head Quarter Eagle has a miniscule mintage of just 2,364 coins. Between PCGS and NGC, only 139 examples of the 1857-D Quarter Eagle have been graded in total. Of these 139 examples, only 34 have been certified to be in Mint State condition. This specific example of the 1857-D Quarter Eagle is the only example in Mint State 64 condition. With no examples grading higher than MS64, this 1857-D is the single finest known example.

Compared to other Dahlonega issue Quarter Eagles of this decade, the 1857 is incredibly well-struck. From the denticles around the rim of the coin to the strands of hair on Lady Liberty’s head to the feathers of the eagle on the reverse, the 1857-D is known for its sharp, clear strike.
