1795 Small Eagle S/D Capped Bust Right Gold Half Eagle PCGS AU58

The half eagle was the first gold coin struck for the United States and 1795 is the first year it was minted. Among early dates of the Capped Bust Half Eagle there are many varieties, among them is this S/D or BD-6 example. Named S/D for the striking of the last “S” in “STATES” over a clear “D” on the reverse. It is believed that only 600 examples of any variety of 1795 Capped Bust Half Eagle still exist today, and only 14 of them have been certified as the S/D variety. Of those, only 4 have been graded in About Uncirculated 58 condition with just 4 graded higher. This early example of American gold coinage is a true piece of history as well as an Absolute and Condition Rarity.
