$5 1890-CC Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle NGC/PCGS MS61

Description

The Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle, designed by Christian Gobrecht, was minted from 1839 to 1908. Liberty Head Gold Half Eagles were only struck at the Carson City Mint of the Wild West for only 19 years, ending in 1893. Coming from one of the final Carson City issues, this example was struck in 1890 and is graded in Mint State 61 condition. Out of all 1890-CC Liberty Head Gold Half Eagles struck, only 184 have been graded in MS61 condition. With a minuscule mintage of only 53,800 examples and such a low Mint State 61 population, this example is a tremendous Absolute and Condition Rarity.

Gold Half Eagles struck at the Carson City Mint are incredibly rare as they were only struck there less than two decades and each issue has incredibly low mintages. Compared to the Denver Mint, which only struck Liberty Head Half Eagles for 2 years, the Carson City Mint only struck in total half as many of this series. There are even single issues struck at the San Francisco and Philadelphia Mints that have higher mintages than the entire CC Half Eagle series.
