Description

These stunning examples of No Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles are graded Gem Uncirculated Mint State 65 by either NGC or PCGS. The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, widely considered the most beautiful piece of American coinage ever created, was minted from 1907 to 1933. Due to President Theodore Roosevelt`s dislike of U.S. coinage at the time, he employed the famed sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to redesign the Double Eagle. The original Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles did not contain the motto "In God We Trust," but due to public disapproval, the motto was added to the coin in 1908. Years later, in 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt initiated Executive Order 6102, which recalled gold from the American public in order to be melted down. As a result of this executive order, rare coins like the 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens became drastically more difficult to find.
