The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag, was first minted in 1938. Honored on the five-cent piece for nearly 100 years, Thomas Jefferson was only the third president featured on circulation coinage. This specific Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck in 1981 at the San Francisco Mint and has been graded in perfect Proof 70 Deep Cameo condition. Out of every Proof 1981 Jefferson Nickel struck, only 650 examples have been graded in Proof 70 DCAM condition. With such a low PR70 DCAM population, this 1981-S Jefferson Nickel is not only a Condition Rarity, but also one of the finest known.
